Farm Stay East AngliaA Day Out in and around Royston in HertfordshireRoyston is a busy market town which grew up around a cross erected in 1066, marking the intersection of the ancient Icknield Way and Roman ‘Ermine Street’. There are several historic buildings and award-winning gardens. Royston Cave is a man-made cave with medieval carvings made by the Knights Templar dating from around the beginning of the 14th C.
Royston Museum has displays of the Royston & District Local History Society collections relating to the history of this late medieval town and surrounding area. There is also a substantial collection of late 19th century ceramics and glass, plus the Royston Embroidery Project.
Nearby Baldock has retained much of its old-world charm, with handsome 16th – 18th C buildings. Baldock Museum has a permanent display on the history of Baldock, and you can also visit Ashwell Village Museum with its collection of village bygones and agricultural implements.
Situated a few miles north of Hertfordshire, Wimpole Hall (National Trust) is the finest country house in Cambridgeshire. It has over thirty rooms to see including the library, plunge bath and basements. You can also enjoy walks around the landscaped park.
Cromer Windmill Nr Buntingford is Hertfordshire’s sole surviving Post Mill. There are video and audio displays on the history of the mill, and exhibitions on Hertfordshire’s windmills.
Further down the A1 at London Colney the de Havilland Aircraft Heritage Centre is well worth a visit, showing the restoration and preservation of the de Havilland aircraft, including the prototype mosquito.
