A DAY OUT AROUND CAMBRIDGE

The City of Cambridge is a famous University City, noted for its historic colleges (the first founded in 1284), complete with their courtyards and bridges across the River Cam. The crowning glory is KING’S COLLEGE CHAPEL, noted for its fan-vaulted ceiling. Enjoy a walking tour of the city, or take a river trip through the watermeadows and gardens of ‘The Backs’, aboard the famous punts. Explore the medieval churches, parks, bookshops and specialist museums. The FITZWILLIAM MUSEUM is a must, with its vast internationally-renowned collection of antiquities, applied and fine arts. The SEDGWICK MUSEUM in the Earth Sciences Department in Downing Street houses a large collection of fossils from all over the world, and mounted skeletons of dinosaurs, reptiles and mammals! The WHIPPLE MUSEUM of the History of Science houses a designated collection of scientific instruments and models, dating from the Middle Ages to the present. The Cambridge & County FOLK MUSEUM is in a part timber framed 17th C inn, retaining many original fittings. In nearby Granchester the RUPERT BROOKE MUSEUM is a small privately owned museum depicting the life in words and photographs of the poet Rupert Brooke.


For the art lovers the CAMBRIDGE CONTEMPORARY ART Gallery displays work by acknowledged masters and established artists. The Cambridge University BOTANIC GARDEN is a forty-acre oasis of beautiful gardens and glasshouses, with some 80, 000 plant species.


Around Cambridge there are some lovely National Trust Houses to visit. In Arrington Nr Royston WIMPOLE HALL AND HOME FARM is an 18th C house in a landscaped park with a folly and Chinese bridge. ANGLESY ABBEY at Lode is a 13th C Abbey with the later Jacobean House with the famous Fairhaven collection of paintings and furniture.


Families will enjoy DUXFORD IMPERIAL WAR MUSEUM one of the world’s most spectacular aviation heritage complexes, with almost 200 aircraft on display. LINTON ZOO has big cats, lemurs, lynx, wallabies and a wonderful combination of beautiful gardens and wildlife. SHEPRETH WILDLIFE PARK is also a family favourite. For something different the MILTON MAIZE MAZE is a challenge for all ages, and there is also a pets paddock and small coffee shop. The 100 acre site at RSPB FOWLMERE NATURE RESERVE incorporates a nature trail and three bird-watching hides.


For those who enjoy walking WANDLEBURY COUNTRY PARK at Gog Magog Hills is a countryside park and nature reserve, the site of an old Iron Age ring ditch. Woodlands, circular walks, wildlife and public footpaths lead to a Roman Road.
