Farm Stay East Anglia

Shotley Peninsula

THE STRAND along the banks of the Orwell River is a rich ground for wading birds. You can park safely at various intervals along here, and enjoy the wildlife whilst marvelling at the elegant structure of the Dutch-built Orwell Bridge. Sailing boats and barges ply their way up and down the river as do larger boats on their way to the docks in Ipswich (well worth a visit!)

The B1456 will take you through WOOLVERSTONE where can be seen WOOLVERSTONE HALL, now the home of the Ipswich High School for Girls. Then on to PIN MILL, where there is a Pay and Display car park. The BUTT AND OYSTER pub is an excellent place to watch the , enjoy the good food, and speculate on the exact locations used by Arthur Ransome in his book and other books.

For many years, SHOTLEY was the home of the shore-based H.M.S. Ganges. The tall mast with the button on top is a feature of the site. At the end of the road is the BRISTOL ARMS child friendly S HEAD. At Holbrook you will pass through the grounds of the Royal Hospital School, formerly in Greenwich as a school for the children of naval personnel. Further along the road you will come to the brick-walled entrance to ALTON WATER.

This is a "must" -  the TATTINGSTONE WONDER and the ORANGE BOX, a small Art Gallery which has monthly exhibitions from local artists.

If you enjoy cycling you may like to explore the North Sea Cycle Route which takes you through some lovely areas of Suffolk

We have B&B accommodation and holiday cottages in Shotley and also nearby at Stutton, Wix near Manningtree and Hintlesham nera Hadleigh
