A DAY OUT AROUND LOWESTOFT

LOWESTOFT, the most easterly town in Britain, and its surrounding district offer a very wide range of things to do and see within a short drive. Firstly there are the sandy beaches and walks by the sea along rural coastal paths. There is also a fine promenade in Lowestoft.

The EAST POINT PAVILION offers refreshments and entertainment for children, with its Fountains, which are illuminated at night. You will also find the Tourist Information Centre here.

A walk along the promenade which takes you to SOUTH KENSINGTON GARDENS could be an ideal opportunity to drop into the FLYING FIFTEENS and enjoy one of their pots of specialist teas, you will find a whole page of different varieties. Sit in the pretty garden overlooking the sea and relax for a while before visiting the Lowestoft Porcelain Factory, where you can see the creation of this exclusive fine bone china, ideal for presents and souvenirs. To the north of Lowestoft the beach is also unspoilt and rustic, and a walk through the dunes, and even past a Naturist Reserve, eventually takes you to the villages of Corton and Hopton.

A very relaxing time can be enjoyed in SPARROW'S NEST PARK situated just below Lowestoft's lighthouse. There is a collection of MUSEUMS here - one with artefacts about the town's past, a Maritime Museum specialising in exhibits about the history of Lowestoft's fishing fleets during the time of sailing ships and leading on to steam and diesel, and the War Memorial Museum. Finish up with a nice cup of coffee/lunch at the PARK RESTAURANT.

OULTON BROAD is situated to the west of the town where St. Nicholas Everitt Park houses THE LOWESTOFT MUSEUM. A very fine collection of the famous Lowestoft porcelain is displayed there. At the far end of the park is a PETS CORNER for children, and the walk along the water's edge has for many years been a popular place for feeding the many ducks.

Motor cruisers and yachts are moored alongside the park and regular watersports activities take place here; one of the most popular being the Power Boat racing every Thursday evening during the summer season. Browston Hall Carvery is an ideal place to enjoy a meal. Boat hire and day trips can be booked near the Wherry Hotel.

The B1074 from Oulton Broad leads to the village of Somerleyton with its very pretty unspoilt village green surrounded by attractive old cottages and the village school.

SOMERLEYTON HALL and GARDENS are well worth a visit with the famous 1846 Yew Hedge Maze being one of the highlights. The Dukes Head at Somerleyton offers good food if you are in need of refreshment. Further along the B1074 sign posts will lead to FRITTON LAKE COUNTRY WORLD, set in 250 acres of unspoilt countryside beside one of the most beautiful lakes in East Anglia, where a variety of attractions, such as FALCONRY and HEAVY HORSES, but to mention a few, can be enjoyed.

REDWINGS VISITOR CENTRE and Horse Sanctuary makes a lovely day out for the animal lovers. Rescued horses, ponies and donkeys are all in perfect surroundings of CALDECOT HALL which lies one mile North East of the village of Fritton on the A143 between Gt Yarmouth and Beccles.

Taking the A12 in a northerly direction out of Lowestoft leads to the PLEASUREWOOD HILLS FAMILY THEME PARK, where a very full day out can also be enjoyed.

At the opposite end, to the south of Lowestoft, the SUFFOLK WILDLIFE PARK is set in 100 acres of parkland, where another wonderful day can be enjoyed seeing many different varieties of animals and birds from the African continent.
